Frequently asked questions

What happens when the 14-day trial ends?
The dashboard locks until you buy a license. Containers keep running, and your files and settings stay as they are. Nothing is charged, because the trial never asks for a card. Once you buy, the dashboard unlocks as soon as Udon verifies the license.
Is Udon a subscription?
No. Udon is a one-time payment of $29 per Mac, with nothing to renew, and every purchase comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee.
What is Udon?
Udon turns an Apple Silicon Mac into a home server for your apps, files, and media. You manage it from a web dashboard in any browser, with an optional AI assistant that can deploy apps and fix problems for you. It installs with one terminal command, and the Mac keeps working as a normal Mac.
Which Macs can run Udon?
Any Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer) on macOS 26 or later: Mac mini, Mac Studio, MacBook, or iMac. Intel Macs are not supported. A Mac mini is the usual pick for an always-on home server because it is small, quiet, and draws a few watts at idle.
Can Udon run Docker containers?
Yes. Udon runs standard images from Docker Hub, GitHub Container Registry, or any other registry, on Apple Container (Apple's native runtime) or OrbStack (Docker-compatible). On OrbStack you can also build compose stacks in the visual Composer. See Deploy a container.
What can I manage with Udon?
Containers and compose stacks, apps from the App Store, files and SMB shares, drive health, live system stats, Homebrew packages, a terminal, and the Mac's screen through remote desktop. It all works from any browser, at home or away over Tailscale.
What can I self-host on a Mac?
Stream media with Jellyfin or Plex, back up photos with Immich, sync files with Nextcloud, keep passwords in Vaultwarden, block ads for the whole network, archive documents with Paperless, and automate it all with n8n. It can also host your dev environments and coding agents, which you reach from a laptop or iPad anywhere.
Why use a Mac as a home server?
A Mac mini idles at a few watts, runs near silent, and still has power to spare for media, photos, and a dozen containers. macOS has no dashboard for running self-hosted apps, and Udon adds one.
What are the alternatives to Udon?
Unraid, TrueNAS, or Proxmox on dedicated x86 hardware, a Synology NAS, or Umbrel, CasaOS, or OpenMediaVault on a Raspberry Pi or spare PC. On the Mac itself, you can go manual with SSH and a container tool like Portainer. We compare Udon with each: Udon vs Unraid, Udon vs TrueNAS, Udon vs Umbrel, Udon vs CasaOS, Udon vs Proxmox VE, Udon vs Synology, Udon vs OpenMediaVault.
How does the Udon AI assistant work?
The assistant is optional and stays off until you turn it on. Connect an Anthropic or OpenAI API key, a coding CLI such as Claude Code or Codex, or a local model on the same Mac. By default it asks before every change, and it records its actions in the audit log. See AI Assistant & MCP.
Is my data private?
Yes. Udon runs on your Mac, and your files, photos, and media stay there. The dashboard is served over HTTPS, and for remote access Udon uses Tailscale, your own private network. If you connect a cloud AI model, it sees what you ask the assistant to work on.
